Computer file extensions are typically a three or four character extension on the end of a file, started with a dot. For example, a typical text file in Windows is ".txt". File extension awareness is very important. It can prevent you from downloading potentially dangerous files, and will also let you know which application is needed to open them.

For example, you could use the Windows Paint, ACDsee, Irfan View, and a variety of other applications.

An easy way to find out about file formats and their details is by searching on the internet. This search will usually bring you many results and explanations. If you find the file type on the internet you are likely to immediately find details on the kinds of programs that can run it as well.
If your unknown file format is some kind of audio file, graphics file or video file, chances are that you will be able to run it with a common software that can be downloaded. Downloading a freeware or shareware application from the internet will let you open the unknown file and give you an application that you can associate with the file. Nowadays, with lots of freeware and shareware application on the internet, you should be able to open any kind of common file format easily.
